Another BJP leader support caste census, Pressure on PM Modi mounts

NEW DELHI: The pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a caste-based census has mounted with another BJP leader demanding the exercise.

Former BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ananda Bhaskar Rapolu, in a letter to PM Modi, has demanded the caste-based census and said it would be helpful in framing public policy.

In the letter, he said, "I seek your expeditious attention on making Indian society much more transparent and create a pragmatic environment for welfare delivery by according caste-based census."

Rapolu further said, "You have gained permanence in achievements for the times to come, by several historic corrections for national integration and territorial inclusion. This will establish your commitments for inclusiveness - Sab ka Saath, Sab ka Vikas, Sab ka Vishwas."

He accused the Congress-led UPA government for a faulty census. "The failure of rulers of 2011 though initiated but half-baked, as they themselves admitted their erring, rubbed on the wrong side of OBCs and results are history… Your nod will create history and ensure correction and transparency, he said."

The letter comes a week after a 10-party delegation from Bihar, led by chief minister Nitish Kumar, Modi in the national capital to demand a caste census.

The BJP and the JD(U), which Nitish belongs to, are alliance partners in Bihar and at the centre.

The delegation which met the prime minister on August 23 included Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD, Asaduddin Owaisi of AIMIM and Janak of the BJP.

The other parties included HAM-S, VIP, Congress and CPI (ML). The Bihar delegation met after the state assembly passed a unanimous resolution backing a caste census.

BJP’s Janak Ram, who was part of the delegation, said Modi heard out everyone’s view like the “guardian of a family”. Everyone was “satisfied” and the PM’s decision will be acceptable to all, he added.
