Navjot Sidhu's advisor quits after row over his controversial 'Kashmir' remarks

Navjot Singh Sidhu's advisor Malwinder Singh Mali, whose recent remarks on Kashmir had created a controversy, on Friday said that he will stop giving suggestions to the Punjab Congress president.

"I withdraw my consent given for tendering suggestions to Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu," said Mali in a press statement.

This comes a day after the Congress gave an ultimatum to Sidhu to remove his advisers.

In a recent social media post, Mali had waded into the issue of revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

He had reportedly said if Kashmir was a part of India, then what was the need to have Articles 370 and 35A. He had also said, “Kashmir is a country of Kashmiri people.”

The remarks drew sharp reactions form within the Congress and outside, with calls for Sidhu to drop Mali as advisor.

In his statement on Friday, Mali says that a hate campaign has been launched against him by some political leaders.

He names Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh and other Congress, BJP and AAP leaders and says these leaders will be held responsible if there is any physical harm to him.

In another development, the Congress' Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Rawat has expressed desire to be relieved of the responsibility.

He has cited the assembly elections in his home state Uttarakhand next year, where he is the Congress' campaign committee chairman, to be relieved from the post.

While the Congress is seeking to retain power in Punjab, it aims to return to power by defeating the ruling BJP in the hill state.
