Army chief M M Naravane is in Bangladesh on a five-day visit to further strengthen bilateral military ties

NEW DELHI: Army chief General M M Naravane is in Bangladesh on a five-day visit to further strengthen bilateral military ties as well as discuss closer collaboration on strategic issues.

Gen Naravane, who arrived in Dhaka on Thursday morning, held extensive discussions with top officers of the Bangladesh armed forces, including Army chief General Aziz Ahmed and Navy chief Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal.
He is also slated to meet Bangladesh foreign minister A K Abdul Momen during the visit, which comes soon after PM Narendra Modi visited Dhaka on March 26-27 and at a time when the ongoing turmoil in Myanmar and the consequent refugee crisis has raised concerns in both New Delhi and Dhaka.
“The visit will further deepen the bilateral military relationship and act as a catalyst for closer coordination and cooperation between the two countries on a host of strategic issues,” said a senior official.

India has steadily stepped-up military ties with Bangladesh, which incidentally acquired its first-ever diesel-electric submarines from China a few years ago, as part of the overall policy to counter Chinese inroads into its neighbourhood.
Gen Naravane's visit also comes in the midst of the “Swarnim Vijay Varsh” celebrations to mark 50 years of the liberation of Bangladesh and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur.
The Army chief will also attend the closing ceremony of the ongoing counter-terrorism “Shantir Ogrosena” exercise, in which military personnel from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka are taking part, along with observers from the US, UK, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, among others.
He will also deliver a keynote address on the “Changing Nature of Global Conflicts: Role of UN Peacekeepers” at a seminar as well as interact with the force commanders of the UN missions in Mali, South Sudan and Central African Republic and the deputy chief operations officer of the Royal Bhutanese Army on April 12.
