Kangana Ranaut says she predicted India’s name changing to Bharat years ago: ‘We are Bhartiya not Indians’

Amid speculations of an official change in the name of the country from India to Bharat, actor Kangana Ranaut has favoured the proposal. The Thalaivii actor took to social media and said the name ‘India’ was an identity given by the British and said, “We are Bhartiya, not Indians”.

Kangana, on Tuesday, took to X (formally Twitter) and shared an old press report of her statement in which she had put forward her desire to rename India two years ago. She then suggested that the country be called Bharat instead of India. In yet another tweet, Kangana also wrote, “Congratulations to everyone!!  Freed from a slave name … Jai Bharat 🇮🇳.”

The buzz around the change in the name of the country started on Tuesday after the government sent out a G20 Summit dinner invitation in the name of the “President of Bharat”, and not the President of India.

In another social media post, Kangana wrote a long post explaining why India should be called Bharat. She wrote, “What is there to love in this name? First, they couldn’t pronounce ‘Sindhu’ toh usko bigad ke ‘ Indus’ kar diya. Phir kabhi Hindos kabhi Indos kuch bhi gol mol karke India bana diya. (The British couldn’t pronounce ‘Sindhu’ so they turned ‘Sindhu’ into ‘Indus’. Then Hindos became Indos) From the time of Mahabharata, all the kingdoms who participated in the Great War of Kurukshetra came under one continent called Bharat so why were they calling us Indu Sindu??.”

She added, “Also the name Bharat is so meaningful, what is the meaning of India? I know they called Red Indians because in olden English Indians simply meant a slave, they named us Indians because that was our new identity given to us by the British. Even in the olden days dictionary Indian’s meaning was mentioned as slave they recently changed it. Also, it’s not our name we are Bhartiya, not Indians.”
