iPhone 14 series to have four new iPhones, without the iPhone 14 mini
iPhone 14 lineup to have four iPhones -- iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Here 'Pro' supposedly means higher-end specs and ‘Max’ refers to the larger screen size. So the biggest upgrade to the iPhone 14 lineup this year is likely to be the addition of the iPhone 14 Max. This will be the first time that Apple offers a 6.7-inch iPhone model with the ‘Pro’ features. A notchless display and a 48-megapixel camera are expected on the Pro and Max models, among the other changes.
Apple iPhone 14 series likely to go on sale starting September
Apple iPhone 14 series will likely go on sale on September 16, keeping the 'Friday tradition' of iPhone sale day. Apple's iPhone 13 event was held on September 14, 2021 and the phones went on sale on Friday September 24. According to a report in Bloomberg, Apple store employees have been told to prepare for "a major new product release" on September 16.
No iPhone Mini this year
Apple is reportedly doing away with its smallest iPhone, the 5.4-inch Mini this year due to “sluggish sales”. A 2021 report from Nikkei Asian Review predicted the death of the iPhone 14 Mini, and a research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo too suggested the same.
Processor: Will iPhone 14 lineup make the big change
Apple introduces a new A-series processor with its flagship iPhone lineup every year. iPhone 13 runs on the A15 processor, this means that iPhone 14 series will be powered by the A16. However, there are some rumours that claim that Apple may depart from this annual upgrade cycle. They claim that A16 would be reserved for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. while iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max models would get the year-old A15 processor.
iPhone 14 series may cost more, but start at same price tag
Apple iPhone 14 is rumoured to come with a $100 price hike. There have been no price hikes since the last few years. Apple iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 cost the same as their predecessors. Reports suggest that Apple may be forced to increase the price as its supply chain has seen cost increases. But there are also rumours that it may start at the same $799 price tag.
iPhone 14 design
The biggest change on the design front is the removal of the notch cutout. Introduced first with the iPhone X, the notch has stayed the same since then. In fact, several Android OEMs embraced it soon after. The notch is where Apple houses several of the sensors, including for Face ID, speaker, microphone and more. Reports suggest that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models may instead use new hole + pill-shaped cutouts on the display. This means more increase in screen space.
iPhone 14 series may not be all e-SIM
Rumours have been there since 2020 that the iPhone may ditch physical SIM cards entirely. However, it is likely that the Apple iPhone 14 series will not be without physical SIMs. Apple may go for eSIM-only phones with iPhone 15 series.
iPhone 14 to offer biggest camera updates in years
Among other changes, Apple may offer some big upgrades on the camera front in the iPhone 14 lineup. Rumours suggest that Apple has chosen a new supplier for its front-facing camera to make a higher-end lens. There may be upgrades to the front-facing camera's auto-focus features. According to a report from Korean tech site ET News, Korean supplier LG Innotek will provide the selfie camera for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. In a note, Kuo too predicts a hole-punch front camera, making the iPhone 14 notchless, as well as a 48-megapixel wide rear camera for the Pro and Pro Max models, up from 12 megapixels in current iPhones.
No more camera bump
Another big design change that some renders show is a flattened camera bump. According to popular leakster Prosser, the iPhone 14's body is going to be a "thick boy," thick enough, it seems, to encompass all the camera hardware without an annoying, protruding camera setup on the back. The thickness of iPhone 14 is linked to a bigger battery
Always-on lock screen
Apple's iOS 16 includes hints of an always-on mode for the lock screen. However, some reports claim that this feature may be exclusive to the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
