Firecrackers- a murder weapon of the animals or birds?

Atul Malikram:

Dazzling lights, loud deafening sounds, burning fireworks are something that we consider fun, but for the mute animals and birds, and elderly people, they are nothing less than a nightmare. We celebrate our joy by burning crackers, but our speechless pets, animals and birds suffer through it. Several cases about animals meeting various accidents are registered every year but we turn blind eye to each of them.

Diwali celebrates Lord Rama victory over Ravana and his triumphant homecoming. But, how can we celebrate the triumph of good over evil by harming other innocent beings? Lord Rama never asked his people to celebrate his return with loud, burning crackers. Had he? We make this auspicious occasion a traumatic period for the animals, birds and the elderly. Some people use crackers to pull pranks on stray dogs and other animals and practically scare them to death.

Every year, according to an estimate, at least 350 animals and birds suffer from disorientation by the time Diwali is over. Many animals are crushed under vehicles when they run aimlessly from the deafening sounds of crackers. With each passing year, the degree of air pollution due to fireworks is increasing manifold during Diwali. The winged species are affected by sudden bursts of bright lights. Every year, the sky crackers that shine so bright in the sky kill numerous birds. While some receives burns on their feathers, in many cases the lower half of the body gets burnt. They face breathing difficulties due to the release of toxic gases from the burning crackers.

Not only for animals and birds, but the fireworks also trigger certain health concerns for humans as well.Among many other health risks, the bursting of firecrackers prominently increases air pollution and the chances of respiratory problems. The fumes that are released from the burning of crackers cause cough, throat irritation, breathlessness, etc. Elderly with asthma and bronchitis are very vulnerable with a 30%- 40% increase in their chest symptoms and need emergency services.

Isn't it ironical that we celebrate the defeat of evil by supporting something that can be considered the epitome of evil for other living beings? Burning crackers unnecessarily should be prohibited at all costs. Sri Rama was the protector of all his subjects, be it animals, birds or people. He dispensed justice. Shouldn't we follow his example and at least be considerate to all our fellow beings? We need to take steps on individual levels and avoid crackers for the larger good. We can celebrate Diwali in many other ways without causing harm to any species. This Diwali, lets appeal to celebrate the Festival of lights, by lighting lamps, not the firecrackers. Respect the lives of animals and give them a safe world to live in.

Let give them a Ram Rajya.!!!
