Double roles, double dhamaka

Actors Ambrish Bobby and Pawan Singh’s favoruite Bollywood double role movies

Stories of doppelgangers, imposters, and doubles have been a staple of several shows and cinema for light-hearted and suspense plots. Soon, a similar situation will crop in &TV’s light-hearted show, Aur Bhai Kya Chal Raha Hai?. Two imposters enter the haveli in the guise of Ramesh Chandra Mishra (Ambrish Bobby) and Zafar Ali Mirza (Pawan Singh), causing comedy and confusion. Speaking of which, the actors, Ambrish Bobby and Pawan Singh, cannot help talking about their experience of shooting this plot and list down some of their favourite movies on imposters and doppelgangers that entertained them thoroughly.

Pawan Singh, as Zafar Ali Mirza comments, “Enacting double roles with contrasting attributes is no doubt fun but also comes with its challenges. The double roles command more time and energy as one is portraying not one but two characters. However, these drawbacks surpass the paybacks. It is a fantastic learning experience. I’ve always wondered how it would be to play a double role, and, in a way, I am grateful to get this opportunity. Of many double roles’ movies that I have thoroughly enjoyed watching, a few that bought fits of giggling is the cult-classic comedy film ‘Angoor’. The chemistry between Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma was superb! No doubt both are fantastic actors with excellent comic timing. The very plot of the two pairs of identical twins separated with their lives intertwined, leading to confusion and misunderstandings, was hilarious! Another one is ‘Judwa’, starring Salman Khan. After all, who can forget the chaos and commotion that happens when the nasty Raja accidentally swaps places with Bhola Bhala Prem! I can never get enough of these and can watch them on a loop any day!”

Adding to this, Ambrish Bobby, as Ramesh Chandra Mishra says, “Juggling between two different characters is not an easy task. In one scene, you are yourself, and in the other, you must completely enact a different person. And I thoroughly enjoyed essaying both the roles with ease. Speaking about films based on a similar concept, ‘Sandwich’ is my all-time favourite, with Govinda seamlessly transitioning from Shekhar to Sher Singh. Though the person is the same, it almost convinces you that there are two Govindas in the movie. Another movie is ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ with Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in dual roles, one pair being the cop and another con. While Mirza and I are not cops but this is somewhat like our current show track as well.”
