Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday announced the launch of an app to spread the preventive and positive role of the ancient Indian practice of yoga into every nook and cranny of the Covid-hit globe.
The M-Yoga app will have yoga training videos. It will be available in different languages for people across the world, said the Prime Minister, marking the 7th International Yoga Day.
At his government's instance, the UN General Assembly in 2014 had adopted June 21 as the International Year of Yoga.
Mr Modi said when India proposed the International Yoga Day before the World Health Organisation, it wanted Yoga to be made easily available to the people around the world.
In collaboration with WHO, he said, India has now taken another important step.
"Now there will be M-Yoga app, which will have yoga training videos in different languages for people across the world."
Mr Modi said the M-Yoga app will be a great example of the fusion of modern technology and ancient science.
"I believe that the application will play a great role in expanding Yoga across the world and will make the One World, One Health motto a success."
This year, the theme of the occasion is 'Yoga For Wellness', and the focus will be on practicing yoga for physical and mental well-being.
He stressed India's holistic approach to health and wellbeing and said, "the mantra of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (world is one family) , which India has followed since ages, is now finding global acceptance... If there are threats to humanity,Yoga often gives us a way of holistic health. Yoga also gives us a happier way of life.
'I am sure Yoga will continue playing its preventive, as well as positive role in healthcare of masses."
Emphasising the healing power of yoga, he expressed gratitude to the leaders and people of neighbouring Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka for the cooperation they extended to mark the day.
Countries from Japan and South Korea to Niger in Africa to Brazil in Latin America celebrated the day with enthusiasm, reflecting the concern for good health and wellbeing
