QUAD: Some nations trying to ‘sow discord’ among regional countries by hyping ‘China threat', says Beijing

New Delhi: Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga came together for virtual QUAD Summit 2021 and reaffirmed that they were committed to free, open, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, China on Monday criticised the summit saying no 'small cliques' should be formed.



Without taking the name of any country, China said that some nations are trying to hype the Chinese threat and sowing discord among regional nations. 

"Certain countries should shake off their Cold-War mentality and ideological prejudice, refrain from forming closed and exclusive small circles, and do more things that are conducive to solidarity and cooperation among regional countries and regional peace and stability,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said.

The Chinese official’s strong reaction came as he was asked to comment on the four leaders of Quad discussing the challenge posed by China.

"For quite some time, certain countries have been so keen to exaggerate and hype up the so-called ‘China threat' to sow discord among regional countries, especially to disrupt their relations with China," Zhao said.

"However, their actions, running counter to the trend of the times of peace, development and cooperation and the common aspirations of the countries and peoples in the region, will not be welcomed or succeed," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

The first-ever virtual Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) Summit on March 12. Follwoing the meeting, a joint opinion piece was issued by the four leaders and reiterated their commitment to free, open, secure, prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

"We are striving to ensure that the Indo-Pacific is accessible and dynamic, governed by international law and bedrock principles such as freedom of navigation and peaceful resolution of disputes and that all countries are able to make their own political choices, free from coercion. In recent years, that vision has increasingly been tested. Those trials have only strengthened our resolve to reckon with the most urgent of global challenges together," read the opinion piece.

While attending the QUAD Summit 2021, PM Modi said, assured that Indi will work together, closer than ever before, for advancing shared values and promoting a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

In the high-level summit it was decided that huge investments will be made in India so that the country can produce huge amount of COVID-19 vaccines for Indo-Pacific region.
