UN HRC adopts Myanmar resolution demands Suu Kyi's release

The United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday adopted the Myanmar resolution and demanded that the military junta release the country's democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders and to refrain from using violence upon people who have been protesting against the military coup.

The 47-member Geneva forum adopted a resolution brought by Britain and the European Union (EU) unanimously without a vote. However, Russia and China later said that they had “disassociated” themselves from the consensus.

Not surprisingly Myanmar’s envoy said just before the vote that the resolution was “not acceptable”.

The resolution was adopted after the UN human rights investigator for Myanmar urged the UN Security Council to consider imposing punitive sanctions, arms embargoes and travel bans against the country and the military leaders and their family members in response to the coup. They also demanded that the junta allow UN monitors to visit the country and get a first hand idea about the ground situation in the country, the BBC reported.
