New Delhi, Jan 6: A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde will on January 11 hear petitions challenging the new agri reform laws enacted by the Centre and issues related to the ongoing farmers' protest at Delhi border points.
A bench headed by the CJI observed that there had been no breakthrough in the impasse between the Centre and scores of farmers protesting at national capital borders to repeal the three farm laws.
"We clarify that this court will not interfere with the protest in question. Indeed the right to protest is part of a fundamental right and can as a matter of fact, be exercised subject to public order," the bench said.
Saying there can certainly be no impediment in the exercise of such rights as long as it is non-violent and does not result in damage to the life and properties of other citizens, the court added that ryots’ protest should be allowed to continue without impediment and without any breach of peace either by the protesters or the police.
Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing on behalf of the Centre, informed the court that healthy discussions are going on between the government and farmers over these issues and there is good chance that parties may come to a conclusion in the near future.
The bench said, “We want to encourage talks. We will keep the matters on Monday and if AG tells us that talks are on, we will adjourn the matter.”
The purpose of the protesting farmers would not be served if they continued to sit without engaging in talks, the bench added.
