Third Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader arrested by police in the Kashmir valley

 Former minister Naeem Akhtar was third Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader arrested by police in the Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours, official sources said.


Earlier during the day yesterday two senior PDP leaders Sartaj Madni and Peerzada Mansoor by police.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti reacting to these arrests alleged that democracy is being murdered in Jammu and Kashmir.

They said police arrested Akhtar who was government spokesperson during PDP-Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition government from his house on Monday night. However, his family members alleged that no arrest warrant or any other document were produced by the police before he was taken away.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter former Chief Minister and Vice President of the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) Mehbooba said “ J&K admin is on an arrest spree today. PDPs Nayeem Akhtar too has been abducted by J&K police & is being taken to MLA hostel. Looks like BJP is planning to manipulate DDC results tomorrow & don’t want any resistance. Democracy is being murdered in J&K”.

Daughter of Akhtar, Shehryar Khanum in a tweet said “My father @shangpal has been detained at this unearthly hour. There was no order or govt instruction shown to us. We don’t know the ground of detention or the duration. Cannot relive through the horror of last year but will stand by him always”.

Akhtar was among the last mainstream leader who was released from detention since August 5, when centre abrogated Article 370 and 35 A , besides divided the J&K into two Union Territories (UTs).
