The BSE Sensex on Thursday nosedived by 302 pts to open at 43,291.89 on profit booking by local operators at higher level.
The Nifty of National Stock Exchange too eased by 87.95 pts to 12,661.20.
Selling was seen in Bankex, Finance, Metal and Oil and Gas stocks.
The Sensex registered intra days high and low at 43,543.96 and 43,285.30 pts respectively.
The Nifty registered intra days high and low at 12,741.15 and 12,660.75 respectively.
The Mid Cap moved up by 0.48 and Small Cup by 0.90 pc respectively.
In 30 scrips 10 advanced while 20 declined.
The losers were HDFC by 2.33 pc to Rs 2269.95, ICICI Bank by 1.94 pc to Rs 477.05, ONGC by 1.94 pc to Rs 70.90, SBI by 1.79 pc to Rs 230 and Axis Bank by 1.74 pc to Rs 597.90.
The gainers were Nestle India by 0.81 pc to Rs 16,834.05, Hind Unilever by 0.71 pc to Rs 2146.30, Asian Paints by 0.54 pc to Rs 2193.75 and Bharti Airtel by 0.40 pc to Rs 480.25.
