Ace Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal on Sunday expressed her desire to open Badminton Academy in Himachal Pradesh.
Saina, along with her spouse Arjun Awardee Parupalli Kashyap, also an International badminton player, called on Himachal Pradesh Governor Bandaru Dattatraya at Raj Bhavan, Shimla on Sunday.
On this occasion, the former world number player said that she was keen to open Badminton Academy in Himachal Pradesh.
Saina also said that players from North India need to visit Hyderabad and Bangalore for coaching. She feels that they should get international level coaching in North India itself.
The 30-year-old shuttler opined that coaching was very important for level playing and coaches should be of an international level so that performance could be maintained.
Saina also praised the cricket stadium in Dharamshala and said that most of the players were doing well at the national level but often lag behind at the international level.
Under the tutelage of legendary coach Pullela Gopichand in Hyderabad, Saina created history when she won the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics Games.
The Haryana shuttler started turning heads very early on in her career when she won the BWF World Junior Championships in 2008. The same year she made her first Olympics appearance in Beijing, but it was only at London 2012 that she gained worldwide fame.
Born on the March 17, 1990, Nehwal started playing badminton at the age of eight after her family moved from Haryana to Hyderabad.
Parupalli Kashyap said that many players went abroad for training at high altitude whereas this training could be done in Himachal also as there were plenty of possibilities in the state.
He said that as far as badminton is concerned, it was a very expensive sport and most coaches and facilities were lacking.
As per Himachal tradition, Dattatraya honoured Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap ,with a Himachali cap, shawl and presented the Raj Bhavan Photo as a memento to them.
